Parking for Graduation
May 30, 2013

May 27, 2013

Dear Titan Parent,

Graduation day, which is June 8, 2013 is nearing and plans are being made at this time to make this special ceremony a successful one. Graduation will take place at 6:30 at the football stadium. As you already know, our school is undergoing major construction. Parking is extremely limited at this time. However, we are making the best efforts to accommodate everyone. The plan will be as follows:

All seniors will park at West Junior High and ride the shuttle bus to the high school.

The shuttle buses will start running at 4:00. Seniors must be at the high school by 5:30.

Handicap parking will be the only parking available at McDowell High School and will be located in the student parking lot. The handicap sign must be visible either hanging from the mirror or on the license plate.

All others attending the ceremony must ride a shuttle bus. Shuttle buses will be located at Peebles, Big Lots, and Roses. They will start running at 4:30 in order to have plenty of time to transport folks to the high school in time for graduation.

In case of rain, a plan has been established. A close eye will be kept on the weather as well as the forecast for this day. A determination will be made as soon as possible after 12:00 so that the gym can be set up for the ceremony. At that time, a parent link call will be made to inform the staff, seniors and parents. The 8 tickets that were provided to seniors will be vitally important in this case. If the ceremony is moved to the gym, then folks must have a ticket in order to attend the ceremony.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call McDowell High School at 652-7920. We appreciate your understanding and support.

ZAPS ACT Prep Workshop
February 4, 2013
The ZAPS ACT workshop is scheduled for Feb. 18 & 19 from 3:30 - 6 pm.   This is a change from our normal SAT workshop.  It is $79 for the class.  We do have some partial scholarships available for those who may need it.

This workshop is targeted to Juniors and Sophomores.  All Juniors will take the test here at MHS in March during the school day as required by the NC State Board of Education.  With a top score of 36 and the national average at 21, a score increase of even 1 or 2 points on the ACT provides a significant advantage.  Students who complete a ZAPS ACT Prep seminar and practice the tips and strategies learned will typically raise their score 1-4 points.
In this seminar, students will:
-learn tips for improvement in all 4 subtests
-practice strategies to eliminate wrong answer choices
-take shortened practices tests that mirror the actual testing experience
-prepare to write a well-organized essay
-reduce test anxiety and gain confidence
-receive a comprehensive study guide and a 24 practice test workouts.

We wanted to offer our students this opportunity because many of our juniors are using this ACT score from the March test as their sole score for college entrance.  Participation in this workshop will allow them to boost their scores and use that for college admission in the Fall of  2013.

To register:  visit or call 1-877-927-8378  For a scholarship or partial scholarship - please contact your student's counselor before registering on the website.

College Application Week
November 6, 2012
College Application Week will begin on November 12 til November 16 at 5pm.  Let the counselors help you and your students through this sometimes confusing process!  This week only - seniors can apply to multiple private schools, community colleges, and public schools at no cost and have all the counselors and GEAR UP staff available to assist them.  Many schools are waiving their application fees for this week, while others are not.  For those schools who are not, students who qualify can receive a fee waiver.  We encourage all seniors to particpate in this weeks activities at MHS.  Teachers have signed up their senior classes to attend, however, not all have.  If a senior wants to pariticpate, and their class has not signed up, they will need to make a private appointment to come through their counselor or come afterschool.  We will have extended hours on Tues/Wed/Thurs until 6 pm.  GEAR UP will have an additional hour of service on Thursday til 7 pm.  All sessions will be in the downstairs media lab in the media center. We encourage students to access their accounts, review college applications that they plan to complete, and have all essays required saved on a flashdrive to upload on the day scheduled to attend.  GEAR UP is also hosting an essay workshop on Thursday, November 8 ( more information below regarding this event).
For more information, contact Kendall Waugh 652-7920 or email

New Policy for Community Use of School Facilities
October 25, 2012

In the past, school facilities have been used during evenings and off-hours by groups that may be associated with, but not strictly connected to, our educational programs. From now on, per new policy guidelines, these groups will have to fill out a facilities usage form with the CO to gain board approval. This will not apply to clubs or other co-curricular activities, but it would apply to groups such as Relay for Life and even PTO. The form must be approved by the Central Office at least 7 days prior to the event.

A copy of the form can be downloaded from [Files] > [Forms] in the navigation menu above. It's called Application for Community Use of School Facilities.

Auditions for "Blithe Spirit"
August 30, 2012
MARION, NC – McDowell High School’s Titan Theatre Company will conduct auditions for their first production of the new school year; “Blithe Spirit” by the British playwright Noel Coward. Auditions will be held in the McDowell High School Media Center Titan TV Studio on Monday September 10th and Wednesday September 12th beginning at 3:30 pm. There are parts for 5 females and 2 males to be cast. Auditions are open to any McDowell County student in 9th through 12th grade.

The comedies’ action centers on a well to do novelist who, while researching his next best seller, inadvertently invites the ghost of his departed wife into the home that he shares with his second wife. Things get wilder as the “ghost wife” can only be seen and heard by him. There’s an eccentric medium charged with ridding the house of the spirit and neighbors and servants who must sort out what is happening in their small English village.

The Titan Theatre Company is sponsored by Greg Hils and works in co-operation with Foothills Community Theater and MACA. Anyone interested in helping the company is encouraged to call 652-2440 for more information.

Titan Theatre Company presents: You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown
April 4, 2011
The Titan Theatre Company (TTC) is pleased to announce the performance dates for their first ever musical production. “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown” is based upon the comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles M. Schulz. The musical opens to the public Thursday, May 5th and runs through Sunday May 8th in the McDowell High School Auditorium. While last produced at MHS in 1981, this production is the Broadway revival edition with new songs and characters, all masterfully brought to life by writer and composer Clark Gesner with help from Michael Mayer and Andrew Lippa.

“You're A Good Man Charlie Brown” (REVISED) opened on Broadway in 1999. It is a fresh approach to the all-time 1967 classic. Sally Brown joins Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Schroeder and Snoopy in this version. Two new songs, Beethoven Day and My New Philosophy, have been added to the twelve wonderful numbers of the original version, such as My Blanket and Me, The Kite, The Baseball Game, Little Known Facts, Suppertime and Happiness. The Thursday thru Saturday performances begin at 7:30 pm with Sunday’s curtain time on Mother's Day at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for students and senior adults.

The cast is a wonderful blend of TTC vets and newcomers, seniors and underclassmen. Senior Andrew Warburton will be playing Charlie Brown, Jessie Emery will be the faithful dog Snoopy, Charlie’s nemesis Lucy Van Pelt will be sung by Mariah McKesson, Dalton Brooks will play Schroeder, the apple of Lucy’s eye, Tiffany Fields plays Lucy's little brother Linus, and Mary Greene portrays Sally Brown, who only has eyes for Linus.

TTC sponsor Jenni Ruebusch, drama teacher at East McDowell Jr. High, is the director and choreographer for the production, while MHS Choral teacher, Nancy Long is the music director. Vicki Burton is the piano accompanist. The show is produced in cooperation with Tams-Witmark Music Library, Inc. of New York and is licensed by Tams-Witmark.

The Titan Theatre Company is an extracurricular acting ensemble that seeks to offer young people an outlet for their creative gifts and aspirations. Anyone interested in helping the company is encouraged to call 652-2440 for more information.

Congratulations to the Rifle Team
April 4, 2011
The NJROTC Rifle Team traveled to Fort Benning, GA and shot in the U.S. Army Open National Championship. Overall, we finished 9th, however just making it there really shows the accomplishments of the rifle team. Over 8,000 shooters shot trying to earn the invitation and our cadets were good enough to be in the 100 that qualified to attend. Tiffany Tedder, JC Mostiller, and Justin Ramsey led the way shooting slightly above their individual averages. Fantasha McMillan, shooting in her first competition, shot a personal best on the first day, only to improve that score by 42 points on the second.

Congratulations to these students!

A memo from our Superintendent, Dr. Ira Trollinger...

We are very fortunate to have some really wonderful historical places in our county. Places such as the Gateway Museum, The Orchard, Carson House, Catawba Falls, Historic Downtown Marion and the Depots in both Old Fort and Marion. We have been contacted by another historic prospect for our help. The men and women behind the building of Davidson's Fort have asked for our help in building a replica of the fort for our students to enjoy. It reminds me of the time that Governor Terry Sanford asked all the school children to send their dimes to salvage the Battleship USS North Carolina.

Today, the principals and I are asking all school children and staff members to help us raise money to buy logs to finish Davidson's Fort. It takes $100 to buy a log, prepare it, and get it into place at the fort. Our school campaign will be entitled, "Finish the Fort" and will take place during the first two weeks of March. Our goal is for each grade at each elementary school to raise enough money to buy a log. Our goal for the two junior high schools and high school is for each grade to raise enough money to purchase three logs. Early College and AEC can show all of us up by raising the highest per student amount than any other school.

Therefore each elementary school will have a goal of seven logs and each secondary school a goal of nine. This is an ambitious goal but one that I think we can surpass. Schools are encouraged to come up with creative ideas to raise money. Clubs and Grades in the schools can challenge each other. Dances can be held. Collection of loose change can be used to raise money to help meet the goal. Other ideas can be used to reach your goal.

If all of the schools reach their goals over eighty logs will be able to be purchased and put into place. I HOPE THAT EACH SCHOOL AND STAFF MEMBER WILL TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE AND HELP US FINISH THE FORT. Good luck and best wishes for a successful campaign. All McDowell County citizens will be proud when we have a replica of a fort that meant so much to the development of our area. Our students and families can visit the fort and enjoy the historical enactments that are done there! Thanks for all of your help with this campaign.

Dr. T.

Titan Theatre Company presents: Almost, Maine
November 17, 2010
The Titan Theatre Company unveils their first full-length production of the school year with the off-beat comedy hit, “Almost, Maine” by John Cariani opening to the public on Friday, December 3rd and running through Sunday, December 5th in the McDowell High School Auditorium. The show has been lauded for its creative twists and turns, unusual characters, and the use of storytelling. Stylistically, the show owes as much to the popular TV series’ “Lost” as it does to “Northern Exposure.” All of the scenes are viewed as occurring simultaneously and center around developing and decaying relationships during the peak of the annual arrival of the spectacular Aurora Borealis. The Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 pm. Sunday’s curtain time will be 2:30 pm. Tickets are priced at just $5.00.

Please note: Wednesday December 1st will be FREE to all McDowell County students, grades 6th through 12th. This is for one performance only and will be on a first-come first-served basis. Show time is 7:30 pm. This comedy is rated PG-13.

Sponsors: Greg Hils (828-652-2440) and Jenni Ruebusch (828-652-7711).

NJROTC Challenge: Push-ups For Veterans
November 9, 2010
We are off to a GREAT start on the "Push-ups for Veterans" Challenge which goes through next Friday, November 19th. Our goal as a school is ONE push-up for every American killed and missing in the Vietnam war, a total of 59,894. After day 1 we stand at 5,885 or about one-tenth of the way there.

Come on down during lunch to cheer on a student or do a push-up in Honor or Memory of a loved one. We need EVERYONE'S support!

UPDATE: We did it! Thank you for your support and words of encouragement in this endeavor! Some thought that this was an impossible undertaking, doing one push-up for every American killed and missing from the Vietnam War, a total of 59,894. Well I am proud to say WE did it. That's right, together McDowell High School achieved what some thought could not be done. Thanks to every student and faculty member who did a push-up, every one counted and we finished with 60,311.

UPDATE: Watch the news coverage (Flash Video) that aired on WLOS, ABC 13 Asheville NC on November 30, 2010. It was part of the Never Stop Learning segment.

Titan Cross-Country - October 30, 2010
October 30, 2010
Charlotte's McAlpine Greenway Park was the site of this year's 4A Western Regional Cross Country meet on Saturday. After an entire season of dealing with hotter than usual weather, the runners were treated to near perfect conditions. It was still in the 50s when 150 boys thundered off the starting line at 10:30 Saturday morning. At the halfway point, T. C. Roberson's Cole Raines led a pack of 6 runners. Cole ran an outstanding race to claim the victory over Daniel Osborne of Watauga by 1 second in 15:47 for the 5k course. Charlotte's Ardrey Kell HS easily won the team race with T. C. Roberson, Myers Park, and Watauga also advancing to the State Championship. Due to injuries and schedule conflicts, the Titan boys were not able to field a full team. The Titans that competed are to be commended as they all ran their fastest times of the season. Leading the team again was Senior Billy Hendley in 19:20. Junior Arnold Estrada was close behind at 19:22 while Sophomore Matthew Hagarty at 22:08 and Junior Tyler Elliot at 22:34 rounded out the Titan squad.

It was a little warmer at 11:30 when the gun went off for the girls. By halfway, it was down to two girls with Darby Middlebrooke of Watauga setting the pace. Darby won going away with a 24 second margin of victory in 17:47. The team competition was much closer in the girls race. Ardrey Kell won by 17 points over Myers Park but Myers Park and T. C. Roberson had a tie which Myers Park won on the strength of their sixth runner. Both of those teams were only one point ahead of Watauga. Like the boys, all the Lady Titans ran season bests. Sophomore Lydia Orange edged out teammate Laurel Hagaman by one second to lead the Lady Titans in 24:08. Junior Ellen Anderson ran strong in 26:35. German exchange student Clara Duerwald posted a 2 minute improvement with 26:47 and freshman Katelyn Rideout ran 27:55. Katelyn deserves special recognition for two reasons: First, she decided to run the race, thus allowing the Lady Titans to field a team, despite missing most of the last three weeks of training due to a foot injury followed by a virus. Second, she ran a seasonal best despite the injury, illness, AND being knocked down by a spectator crossing the course during the race. Go Katelyn!

This ends the season for Titan Cross Country. Both teams worked hard and showed steady improvement throughout. With only one senior, both teams can expect to continue to improve next year.

Titan Cross-Country - October 19, 2010
October 19, 2010
On Tuesday, the Titan cross-country teams travelled to Erwin HS for the MAC championship meet. Even though both teams finished last in the meet, many on the team continued to improve. In the boys' race, Cole Raines of T. C. Roberson ran a strong race over Erwin's hilly course to win in 16:17. Roberson dominated the boys race by placing four runners in the top ten and scoring 31 points. For the Titans, Billy Hendley and Brett Pittman dipped under 20 minutes to post their fastest times of the season to finish in 19:57 and 19:59. Arnold Estrada (20:39), Tyler Elliot (22:58), and Kyle Gibson (24:52) also ran seasonal bests.

In the girls' race, it was Brooke Gordon of Roberson celebrating her 16th birthday with the conference win in 18:57. Roberson narrowly defeated North Buncombe 40-46. The Lady Titans were led again by Laurel Hagaman and Lydia Orange who steadily worked their way up in the race to finish in 25:35 and 25:39. All the Lady Titans ran close to their seasonal bests except for Melanie Rodriguez. Melanie not only ran a seasonal best, she stopped to help teammate Holly Stevens who had sprained an ankle early in the race.

NJROTC earns 2009 - 2010 Distinguished Unit Award
April 20, 2010
The Cadets of McDowell High School Navy Junior ROTC once again earned the Distinguished Unit Award. This award is presented to the top 20 Navy NJROTC units. This year the cadets have worked extremely hard moving from 20th place last year to 5th place this year. The cadets have accomplished many firsts this year: hosting their first drill meet, their first Rifle meet, and the Area Six Air Rifle Championship. They have continued to serve our school and county in numerous ways from sending Christmas packages to the troops overseas to feeding those at the local Battered Woman's Shelter to hosting the first Annual McDowell High School 5K race for Relay For Life.

The people at McDowell High are all very proud of these young people. However, without your incredible support on behalf of the cadets and program, these cadets would not have been able to do all that they accomplished. Thank you community for all you do to enable them to succeed.

On Saturday May 1st the McDowell High School JROTC Drill Team won 2nd place Over-all in the Marine Corps League Meet. Competing against 15 of the best teams in the region, the cadets focused on drill and performed extremely well. Thank you for your continued incredible support of our program.

Manna Food Bank Food Drive
September 21, 2009
And the winner of the food drive is ... The Wee Titans! They collected 279 cans over the past five weeks. Some of them took their own money and bought cans. We want to thank everyone who contributed to the food drive. If you collected 2 or 200 cans you are greatly appreciated! It was a close race. Thank you Ms. Grindstaff for doing an awesome job collecting 263 cans. "Team Talbert" collected 239. Thanks Mrs. Caldwell for your 170 cans.

A special thanks to ROTC. They collected so many cans that first week for us. Today they have two more huge boxes that are overflowing. Amazing!

Members will deliver these to Manna Food Bank on Wednesday afternoon. The cans will be weighed and I will have a total as far as how many pounds of food we collected. Thanks again for your support!

Titan Cross-Country - October 13, 2010
October 13, 2010
On Wednesday, October 13, both Titan Cross-Country teams competed at the Enka Jet Jam. The Enka course was, by far, the most challenging of the season. There was an equal combination of grueling uphill and ankle twisting downhill. The girls also had to deal with rain during their turn on the course.

For the fourth time this season, the boys were led by senior Billy Hendley who finished 36th in the 15 team field. Rounding out the team for the boys were Brett Pittman, Arnold Estrada, Matthew Hagarty, Tyler Elliot, Kyle Gibson, and Hunter McGuire. Overall, the race was won by Tyler Breedlove of Hayesville in 17:58 and Owen captured the team title. The Titans were 13th. In addition to be being somewhat irrelevant due to the challenging nature of the course, race times and complete results are not yet available.

Laurel Hagaman led the Lady Titans for the 4th time this season with a 52nd place finish. Lydia Orange, Ellen Anderson, Clara Duerwald, Katherina Sander, Holly Stevens, Hailey Proctor, and Melanie Rodriguez also ran well enough to give the Lady Titans a 12th place finish. Aleshia Reese of Madison led the girls race in 21:57 while Pisgah won the team trophy. The Titans compete again next Tuesday at Erwin in the MAC Championship meet.

As spring has sprung, many of us look about to find we have way too much stuff. Kids have left for college or beyond, paperbacks from last summer sit idle on a bookshelf, the VCR doesn't even work anymore, plus you haven't owned a turntable for 25 years!

Please consider this gentle reminder that the McDowell High School Media Center will gladly take all of your unused or unwanted books, films, CDs, VHS tapes, cassettes, DVDs, 8-tracks, phonograph albums, 78s, 45s, and Edison cylinders, and put them to good use for our upcoming sale May 11th through the 15th. All proceeds go to support the McDowell High School Media Center.

We have boxes or use one of your own.

Now's the time to clear it out.

We even pickup. Call 652-2440 to setup a time!

Enough said.
StoryCorps: Listening Is An Act Of Love
March 20, 2009
McDowell High School’s Titan Theatre Company (TTC) is pleased to announce a first for the club and a first for the region as TTC presents a world premiere production of "StoryCorps: Listening Is An Act Of Love," scheduled for three performances, May 8th, 9th and 10th in the MHS Auditorium.

StoryCorps is the Brooklyn-based, non-profit, oral history project dedicated to honoring and celebrating one another’s lives through the act of listening. Since 2003, Storycorps has traveled nationwide recording more than 35,000 stories of everyday Americans and their extraordinary life experiences. The collected Storycorps works are archived in the Library of Congress. They are regularly featured on the Friday edition of National Public Radio’s "Morning Edition," and easily accessed through the group’s website,

The TTC will bring a number of these stories to life in the upcoming production using the original transcripts along with multi-media staging featuring original live music, video and photography all created by students. "We’re very excited about this production," notes Barbara Sayer, Program Director of NPR affiliate station WCQS-FM in Asheville. WCQS is hosting the StoryCorps mobile recording booth in Asheville from March 26th through May 2nd, capturing stories from throughout Western North Carolina. "This is the perfect compliment to the presence of StoryCorps here in the region," Sayer also remarked. StoryCorps is also heard throughout the region on public stations WNCW, WETS, WFAE, and South Carolina Public Radio.

All three of the TTC’s "StoryCorps; Listening Is An Act Of Love" performances will be free of charge, but advance reservations are strongly recommended. Show times are at 7:30 pm on both May 8th and 9th and at 2:30 pm on Mother’s Day, May 10th.

The Titan Theatre Company is sponsored by Greg Hils. Hils will be producing the premiere, along with TTC alumni and founding members, Ethan Walsh and Shalee Woody who will direct the ensemble. Anyone interested in assisting the company or making a reservation is encouraged to call 828-652-2440 for more information.
